MONIQUE EKRES, STUDENT INTERN
Hi, I’m Monique!
Thank you for being here, and for considering me to walk alongside you as you move forward in your journey towards wellness.
I am an intern currently completing my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University. My approach to therapy is trauma-informed, person-centred, and strengths based. I use an integrated and holistic approach, incorporating aspects of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, and Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). My goal is to help you identify the ways in which your past experiences have shaped who you are, gain insight into the person you have become, and explore how your inherent strengths and qualities can help you overcome your current challenges and move towards personal growth and healing. I do my best to incorporate the core principles of trauma-informed care in my work with clients, including safety, trust, collaboration, empowerment, and choice. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is integral to the outcome of one’s therapy journey and strive to create a space that is safe and welcoming. You will find that I am warm, empathetic, thoughtful, and curious.
For the past 6+ years I have been working with individuals who have experienced human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Many of the individuals I have worked with have struggled with substance use, BPD, suicidality, and other concurrent disorders. I have considered it a great honour and privilege to bear witness to the strength, courage, and resilience of the survivors I have supported. What I have learned from my work in the field is that healing is not linear; it is often messy, painful, and exhausting. But what comes out of all of this is something beautiful and worthwhile.
I hold a Bachelor of Design and enjoy balancing the work I am passionate about in the helping field with a range of creative endeavors. I have painted murals, created websites for small businesses, and dabbled in punch needle and embroidery. I enjoy exploring new places and the peacefulness of being in nature, as well as learning new things about the world around me through non-fiction literature and podcasts.
I would be honoured to walk alongside you in your wellness journey.
